3rd Party Rendering in Houdini Indie

Artikel Houdini, Artikel Houdini Indie,
[ #Houdini ]
SideFX has announced that Third Party Rendering is being added to Houdini Indie. Now independent artists and studios can use RenderMan, Arnold and OctaneRender in their lighting pipeline along with Houdini’s built-in Mantra renderer. Artists can choose their favorite renderer or assign different renderers to groups of objects in the same scene, then composite the results for the final image.

>> See Also: Houdini tutorial

“Arnold's tight integration in Houdini is very popular amongst our VFX studio customers. We are pleased that artists will now be able to try, learn, and actually use Arnold while benefiting from Houdini Indie's much lower starting price,” says Marcos Fajardo | Solid Angle”

Houdini Indie support will also be available for V-Ray and Redshift soon. Both of these renderers are in closed testing right now, with open releases coming sometime later in 2016.

Availability

Third Party Rendering support in Houdini Indie will be available when Houdini 15.5 is released at the end of May 2016. All of the renderers listed here will work within the existing Houdini Indie render limits - 1920x1080 for animation sequences and unlimited for still images. Rendering in Houdini Indie will go directly to the renderer without saving out render description files.

Houdini Indie is available for $199 USD per year. The Third Party Rendering feature is added to Houdini Indie’s already rich feature set at no extra cost. Indie customers with active subscriptions when Houdini 15.5 is released will receive updated licenses free of charge.

Houdini Engine for Unreal Editor

Artikel Houdini, Artikel Unreal,
[ #HoudiniEngine #Unreal ]
Side Effects Software has announced the Public Beta of Houdini Engine for Unreal Engine 4 in April 2015. This plug-in provides game studios with the power of Houdini’s procedural technology working inside the Unreal Editor.
“Many developers have already leveraged procedural techniques in building their content, and tools like Houdini will enable even more possibilities,” says Ray Davis, Unreal Engine General Manager, Epic Games. “By combining the power of UE4 with Houdini technology developers will be able to create richer experiences - quicker than ever.”
Houdini’s procedural workflow involves building node networks that define a repeatable recipe. These networks are wrapped into custom smart assets which can be loaded into the Unreal Editor while the nodes are cooked by the Houdini Engine behind the scenes. While this is not a runtime solution, the Houdini Engine provides artists with an easy way to create their own tools that can be quickly shared with colleagues to ensure consistent high-quality results.
“Top game makers are turning to Houdini to build landscapes, decorate levels, create destruction shots and design in-game FX,” says Judith Crow, Director, Games Segment, Side Effects Software. “Houdini Engine for UE4 makes it possible for small studios and indies to tackle bigger projects while large studios can use it to collaborate more easily amongst artists and distributed partners.”
The planned release for the public beta is early April 2015 and the plug-in will support Unreal Engine 4.7. Game makers can test it using existing assets or they can build their own assets in either Houdini, Houdini Indie or the free Houdini Apprentice edition. Once the plug-in is officially released then a commercial or indie license will be needed to continue working.
To sign up for more information about the beta, go to www.sidefx.com/unreal

Written by Paul Winex, Maya To Houdini Channel Exporter is a plugin for Autodesk Maya that will allow you to export animation channels directly to SideFX Houdini

>> See Also: Animation tutorial

This script is designed to export animation channels from Maya to Houdini CHOP files. A format that Houdini understands as CHOP channels. You do not require any additional plug-ins or scripts to read the data in Houdini.
Supports any number of attributes from channelBox. You only need to select an attribute and add it to the list
-One file can have any number of channels. Very convenient for transferring character animation or mocap
-Automatic determination of clip length from minimum and maximum values of animation curves
-Saving export settings in Maya scene or to a disk file
-Batch-mode to export several FBX files with animation

Houdini Demolition Master tool 1.1

Artikel Demolition Master tool, Artikel Featured, Artikel Houdini,
[ #Houdini ]
Borko Milohanovic has posted the video about system that He is currently developing Houdini Demolition master tool 1.1. The tool gives you control over fragmentation (shattering) and over RBD activation.

>> See Also: Houdini tutorial

In other words, it`s possible to direct and control destruction using custom geometry shapes and standard forces. Also it`s possible to emit particles, additional debris and smoke as well. Support for those secondary elements will be added in upcoming releases.

System also allows you to split your geometry into two peaces in case you don't need small fragments to cover whole object. Splitting geometry like that makes RBD calculation faster. As mentioned already it`s possible to use any kind of shape as fracturing guide and any kind of geometry to guide procedural activation including animated geometry as well.

It`s also possible to have fracturing on top of existing fracturing or layered fracturing using geometry as an guide. That gives you ability to place more smaller fragments in places where needed. Video below explains whole process:
